It is a pity I didn't find your discussion before.

ALV report Export with text columns truncated and numeric with '*'

I agree with you than when note 1486374 says in step 1 "Use push button Views and select view List Output" it should say "Go to Menu Bar > List > Print Preview". At least this is what applied in our cases.
